14th May - Joined the Riverboat Cruise

There was some sort of military convention at the hotel and we spent breakfast watching the various military types walking by.  It was an Army Aviation convention.  Didn't realise the army had an aviation section! There were representatives from Airbus and it looked like armies from other countries were also represented as we noted flags from Belgium, Holland and Canada on the uniforms.  Bob had mentioned yesterday that he had taken a group of members of the British military on a tour of GOO.

We packed up and checked-out and joined the rest of the folks going on the cruise.  We had a quick bus tour of the city.  We saw a number of Honky Tonks and restaurants that were owned by famous people.  Nashville is the state capital of Tennessee often known as the Music City.  Founded in 1779, it gets its name from Ron Framcis Nash, a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.  In 1689, French-Canadian trader, Martin Chartier, established a trading post on the Cumberland River.  In 1714, a group of French traders under the command of Charles Charleville established a settlement at the present location of downtown Nashville.

During the Civil War, the Battle of Nashville was a significant Union victory (15th-16th December 1864).  In 1868 the Nashville chapter of the Ku Klux Klan was founded by Confederate veteran John W. Morton.  Two freed men, David Jones and Jo Reed were lynched in Nashville by white mobs in 1872 and 1975.  Reed escaped when the rope he was hanged from broke.  He was hanged from a bridge and dropped into the water.

Jefferston Street became the historic centre of the African American community.  In 1925 the establishment of the Grand Ole Opry marked the beginning of Nashville's journey as the 'Country Music Capital of the World.'

Nashville is home to four professional sports franchises:

Tennessee Titans (NFL), Nissan Stadium
Nashville Predators (NHL), Bridgestone Arena
Nashville SC (soccer), Geodis Park
Nashville Sounds (baseball), First Horizon Park

The Parthenon in Nashville's Centennial Park is a full-scale reconstruction of the original Greek Parthenon.

A quick trip to the Marathon Motor  Works Museum.

Nashville is a Democrat stronghold, although Tennessee is Republican.

Nashville has been labelled the 'Athens of the South' due to the many colleges and universities.  Sister cities include:  Belfast, Caen, Chengdu, Erbil, Edmonton, Kmakura, Magdeburg, Mendoza, Taiyuan, Tamworth.

After a quick tour, we boarded the ship.  She is called, 'Symphony' and there is a huge double bass in the hallway.  We are in stateroom 335 which is a good size, plenty of storage a cute balcony.

Headed off down for dinner - seared red snapper.  All good.
