Had some friends over for lunch, by coincidence three of them had birthdays.

However, one member of the party seemed oblivious :-)

Tollund Man

Being married to an engineer I get to see some weird and wonderful things. The latest bizarre outing was to see Tollund Man. Tollund man - peat bog man - is essentially a naturally preserved 4th century corpse kept over at Silkeborg university. He is thought to have been a sacrifice to the gods. The museum had a nice display of what life would have been like in the 4th century with models wearing clothes, information about typical daily life and the food people would have eaten. In other parts of the museum there was an exhibition of early 19th century life in Silkeborg. Including this rather splendid drawing room.

Highgate Cemetery

Book Bunch took a trip to Highgate Cemetery last week. We had a guided tour of the West Side which was fabulous. We had a terrific volunteer guide, Russ, who took us round. Here are some of the highlights: This is looking back to the entrance of the West Side. The entrance to the Egyptian Avenue. His dog, Lion, was chief mourner. At the time of his death Tom was estranged from his wife. I don't know who Rosilla Burt was but she sounds a character :-). The family of Dante Gabriel and Christina Rossetti. Apparently, Jim Stanford did not have any connection with Penguin Books his family just liked the idea of the headstone. Operation Carthage

Just up the road from our apartment in Copenhagen is this war memorial. It is such a sad story. Operation Carthage (21 March 1945) was a controversial British air raid on Copenhagen during WWII. The target of the raid was the Shellhus, Gestapo headquarters, in the city centre, a building that had been used for the storage of dossiers and the torture of Danish citizens. The raid was requested by members of the Danish resistance movement in the hope of freeing imprisoned members and destroying Gestapo records. Britain initially turned down the request as too risky, due to the location in a crowded city core and the need for low-level bombing, but eventually approved it in early 1945 after repeated requests. The very low-level attack consisted of 20 Royal Air Force de Havilland Mosquito fast bombers in three waves, escorted by 30 RAF North American Mustang fighters.
