Cupcakes

Now, I am aware that this is going to sound pathetic but I have never made a cupcake in my life.  I do have a recipe that is about a gazillion years old for some individual fruit cakes (this recipe also doubles up as a large fruit cake when needed) but cupcakes have passed me by.  Apparently cupcakes are now 'in' and have been for some time; not sure where I have been but this essential piece of information has also passed me by.  So, in the spirit of 'getting with the programme' I had a go.

I made some 'lemony' ones which I have to say were not bad; I say 'not bad' in the sense that no-one keeled over and died of food-poisoning or required the assistance of an ambulance (previous readers of this blog will know that this is the benchmark by which I tend to evaluate all my culinary exploits).

Well chuffed :-)

  1. Come on, grandma! Even I knew that cupcakes are fantastically "in"!!! There are even shops devoted solely to cupcakes in Paris!!!

Yours look fantastic, by the way. Particularly like the restraint with which you iced them (any future comments about my use of butter will be greeted with snorts of derision)......

Actually, I'm unsurprised that you had never made cupcakes and rather surprised that you have done so now, knowing that you don't really have a sweet tooth.

I'm assuming that mine are in the post?

  2. Know nothing about cupcakes - seriously. Thank you for your compliments - much appreciated. Baking really is not my 'thing'.

Fair comment about the butter; think I used about half a cow's worth today ;-). Still not a big fan of sweet things (recipe for pickled onion cupcakes or - even better - Marmite cupcakes and I'm your taste tester) but I do rather like lemon-y things.

The post? Oh yes, absolutely ...................... *snigger*

  3. And I will have you know Mrs. W that I only used half the butter icing in the bowl!!! (I am clearly aiming to do much better next time ).

  4. I assume, therefore, that the unused half of the butter icing is also in the post!

If I don't eat it, I have a dog who will. Someone who shall remain nameless stole and entire 250g pat of butter from the worktop yesterday morning and ate the whole thing - and half of the wrapper!!!

  5. Actually, come to think of it, somewhere in one of Saint Nigella's tomes there is a recipe for Welsh Rarebit Muffins - savoury muffins featuring cheese, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Could be just the thing for you!
