Another sunny weekend in Denmark

After experiencing fabulous weather over Easter we could not quite believe our luck as the sunshine continued into a second weekend.  Mark and I took the opportunity to try out another one of the fabulous boutique hotels in our book.  This time we decided to go to Niels Bugge's hotel - which I have to confess does sound rather like something I would say in anger if I stubbed my toe - in Viborg.  This hotel is particularly well-known because of it's food.  Naturally I forgot to take a photo of it so had to nick this off the internet:

And the hotel's reputation did not lie. The food was amazing.  I had Danish caviar to start and then lamb slow cooked in hay.  All absolutely gorgeous.

However we have made a mental note to check all room reservations from here on in.  There is clearly a difference between a booking for an ensuite room and a room with a bathroom.  The difference?  A walk up the corridor of about 30 metres!

The area surrounding the hotel is beautiful.  It is a great place for walks and taking in the scenery.

and puppies like it too!

Viborg is one of the oldest settlements in Denmark dating back to the 8th century.  It is famous for its cathedral which was started in the 11th century.  All that remains of the original structure is the crypt - into which, presumably, no cat has been allowed to creep ;-).

Sunday morning we checked out the ruined castle at Bispan's Hald.  The castle was built in 1528 by Bishop Jorgen Friis.

More than three billy goats gruff here.  Who let the goats out?!

King of the Castle and one of the servants ;-).
